The original Star Trek series ran from 1966 to 1969 and tells of the story of the crew of the starship Enterprise and its five-year mission to boldly go where no man has gone before. It starred William Shatner as Captain James T Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as the Vulcan, Spock, DeForest Kelley as Dr McCoy or “Bones” as he was known, James D Doohan as “Scotty”, Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, George Takei as Sulu and Walter Koenig as Chekov.
Star Trek was the creation of Gene Rodenberry and is the setting for six television series as well as many feature films. There was even an animated version that ran from 1973 to 1974 with most of the original cast using their voices for their characters.
From 1987 to 1994 came the hugely successful The Next Generation with Patrick Steward playing the new Enterprise captain, Jean-Luc Picard. We were introduced to Commander William Riker, Deanna Troi, Worf as the first Klingon officer and my favorite Data as an android. It was set in the 24th century, about 70 years after the original Star Trek. This was followed by Deep Space Nine, a spin-off from The Next Generation and took place on a space station instead of the starship. Then came Voyager which followed the adventures of the Starfleet ship USS Voyager as it becomes stranded in the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light-years from Earth. Finally, Enterprise which followed the adventures of the Enterprise, ten years before the Federation was formed, starring Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer.
